Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

By sunrise, the story had broken across every major news network and financial paper in the country.

REAL ESTATE TYCOON'S MOTHER ARRESTED FOR MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR FRAUD AND CHILD NEGLECT THE WILLIAMS FAMILY SCANDAL: FROM THE TRASH TO THE COURTROOM

Front-page headlines featured side-by-side photos of Maris Williams being led out of the precinct in handcuffs, her face hidden under a trench coat, next to a picture of Victor holding Annie at the Grand Oak Plaza.

The scandal shocked the upper echelons of Mexico City and Silverspring society. The high-society women who had once attended Maris’s tea parties immediately severed all ties, publicly condemning her actions to save their own reputations.

Meanwhile, inside the quiet luxury of the Williams Estate, a very different story was unfolding.

Victor sat in the sunny breakfast nook overlooking the gardens, watching Annie eat a plate of fresh pancakes, bacon, and strawberries prepared by the house chef. Catherine sat beside her, sipping hot chamomile tea, color slowly returning to her cheeks.

For the first time in three years, the house felt warm.

"Dad?" Annie called out, wiping maple syrup from her chin.

"Yes, my sweet princess?" Victor smiled, leaning over to kiss the top of her head.

"Are we really going to stay here?" she asked, looking around at the bright room, the fresh flowers, and the big windows. "Is Grandma Maris ever coming back?"

Victor looked at Catherine, who gave him a gentle nod.

"No, sweetheart," Victor promised, taking Annie’s small hand in his. "Grandma Maris is never coming back here. And no one will ever hurt you or Mom again. You’re going to a wonderful new school next week, and you can have all the sweet bread you want—fresh from the bakery."

Annie grinned bright and wide, kicking her feet happily under the table. "Can I have a puppy too?"

Victor chuckled, his heart filling with a deep, peaceful warmth he hadn't felt in years. "You can have two puppies if you want."

Later that afternoon, Brian drove Victor and Catherine to the central city hospital, where top specialists performed a full medical examination on Catherine.

After two hours of scans and blood tests, Dr. Alvarez—a leading gastroenterologist—walked into the private room holding a chart.

"Mr. and Mrs. Williams," Dr. Alvarez said with a warm smile. "I have good news. The damage from the previous infection was severe, but with proper medication, a specialized diet, and rest, Catherine will make a full recovery. There is no permanent organ damage."

Catherine burst into tears of relief, burying her face in Victor’s neck. Victor held her tightly, pulling her onto his lap, kissing her hair over and over again.

"Thank you, Doctor," Victor said, his voice trembling with emotion. "Whatever she needs—the best doctors, the best care in the world—make it happen."

"She’s in good hands, Mr. Williams," the doctor replied, bowing politely before stepping out of the room.

When they were alone, Catherine looked at Victor, her dark eyes shiny with tears. "Victor... what happens now with the business? What about your mother’s trial?"

Victor’s expression hardened, a glint of cold steel returning to his eyes.

"The trial begins next month," Victor said. "And I’m going to make sure she pays for every single day she took from us."
