Chapter 5 - The Lion's Return

The grand ballroom of the St. Regis Hotel in downtown Chicago was packed with over two hundred high-profile investors, board members, and news reporters.
At the head of the stage stood Julian Almeida—a sleek, handsome man forty years old, wearing a tailored navy suit that cost more than my annual salary. He held a leather binder in his hands, wiping away a fake tear as he addressed the crowded room.
"It breaks my heart to stand before you today with such tragic news," Julian said into the microphone, his voice echoing smoothly through the hall's sound system. "My beloved elder brother, Thiago, has suffered a severe neurological relapse. His doctors inform us that he is no longer capable of managing his cognitive functions, let alone this great company."
Sorrowful murmurs ran through the audience. On the large screens behind the stage, a glowing slide presented the official motion: Transfer of Absolute Executive Authority to Julian Almeida.
"Therefore," Julian continued, raising a gold pen, "as the sole remaining active heir of the Almeida bloodline, I ask the board to ratify—"
BANG.
The heavy double brass doors at the back of the ballroom were thrown open with such violent force that they slammed against the marble pillars.
Every head in the room whipped around. Cameras flashed instantly as reporters turned their lenses toward the back of the hall.
Walking through the doors was Marcus, pushing Thiago’s wheelchair.
But Thiago wasn't wearing his usual casual linen cardigan. He was dressed in a sharp, pitch-black double-breasted suit. His hair was slicked back, his jaw set like granite.
And walking right beside his wheelchair was me, wearing my simple maid's uniform, holding Samuel’s hand tightly.
"You're a little early for the funeral, Julian," Thiago’s voice rang out, clear, powerful, and utterly commanding without the aid of a microphone.
Julian dropped his gold pen. It clattered loudly against the wooden podium. His face turned a sickly shade of green.
"Thiago?!" Julian stammered, grabbing the edges of the podium to steady himself. "What... what is the meaning of this?! You are supposed to be under medical supervision at the estate!"
"I was," Thiago said as Marcus pushed him down the central aisle through the sea of stunned executives. "Until my six-year-old guest pointed out that my doctor was feeding me arsenic."
Gasps erupted through the crowd. Reporters began shouting questions, flashbulbs creating a blinding storm of white light.
"Security! Remove this man!" Julian screamed frantically into the microphone. "He is delirious! He's off his medication!"
Six hotel security guards moved forward, but Marcus simply stepped in front of Thiago's chair, unbuttoning his suit jacket just enough to reveal the gold federal marshal badge pinned to his belt.
"Step back," Marcus said calmly. "Federal authority."
Thiago’s wheelchair reached the foot of the stage. He looked up at his younger brother with eyes that could have cut through steel.
"You took my legs, Julian," Thiago said softly, his voice carrying over the silence of two hundred people. "You locked our sister in a dark room for six years. You murdered David Carter, an innocent man whose widow scrubs my floors to feed his son."
Julian backed away from the podium, sweating profusely. "You're insane! You have no proof! Isabella died in a car crash six years ago!"
Thiago smiled—a slow, terrifying smile.
He reached down and pressed a button on his armrest.
The massive digital screens behind the stage—which had been showing the corporate transfer documents—suddenly flickered. The corporate logo vanished.
In its place appeared a live video feed directly from the Almeida mansion.

Sitting in the sunlit garden, holding a cup of tea, was Isabella Almeida. Beside her stood Chief Reynolds of the University Hospital and two armed federal agents holding signed search warrants.
"Hello, Julian," Isabella’s voice echoed through the ballroom speakers, clear and strong. "Did you really think you could keep me in the dark forever?"
