Chapter 4 - The Shattered Table

Sylvia rushed forward, her eyes flashing with venom. “You crazy old fool! How dare you bring police into my son’s home?! Get out before I have you arrested for trespass!”
Detective Rodriguez stepped between Sylvia and me, pulling out a set of steel handcuffs. “Sylvia Vance, sit back down and keep your hands visible, or you will be restrained immediately.”
CEO Henderson stood up slowly, looking between the armed state troopers, the federal badge in my hand, and Marcus’s pale face.
“Marcus,” Henderson said, his voice dropping into a cold, dangerous register. “Who is this woman?”
I looked at Henderson with a professional nod. “Mr. Henderson, my name is Eleanor Vance. I served twenty-seven years as a Senior Assistant United States Attorney for the Department of Justice. And the woman your young executive dumped at a bus station in twenty-degree weather four hours ago—after drugging her and fracturing two of her ribs—is my daughter, Chloe.”
The entire room went dead silent.
Vanessa’s face went completely white. She slowly slid back in her chair, trying to hide her face behind her napkin.
“That’s a lie!” Marcus shouted desperately, sweat breaking out across his forehead. “She’s crazy, Mr. Henderson! Chloe had a nervous breakdown! She left on her own! I have no idea what this old woman is talking about!”
I opened the blue folder in my hand and threw three glossy 8x10 forensic photographs flat onto the center of the dining table, right beside the carved turkey.
The photos displayed Chloe’s bruised wrists, the deep purple contusions along her ribcage, and her shivering, unconscious face on the hospital gurney.
Henderson leaned over and looked at the photographs. His expression turned from shock to pure disgust.
“My God...” Henderson whispered.
“Furthermore,” AUSA Sarah Jenkins stepped forward, pulling out a tablet screen, “we are currently executing a federal search warrant under Title 18 for wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, and criminal conspiracy. Marcus Vance has diverted three point two million dollars from Apex Global’s structural development accounts over the past eighteen months into offshore shell accounts registered in Zurich under the name of Sylvia Vance and Vanessa Sterling.”
Vanessa gasped, jumping out of her chair. “What?! I didn't know about any offshore accounts! Marcus told me it was a bonus payout!”
“Shut up, Vanessa!” Sylvia screamed, turning on the mistress. “Shut your mouth!”
“Mr. Henderson,” I said, looking the CEO straight in the eye. “Your firm’s financial audit team is currently outside in a mobile unit, waiting to secure Marcus’s home office servers. I suggest you step outside and join them.”
Henderson looked at Marcus with cold, absolute contempt.
“You’re finished, Marcus,” Henderson said flatly. “You, your mother, and your mistress. Effective immediately, your employment with Apex Global is terminated. We will cooperate fully with the federal government.”
Henderson grabbed his coat and walked out of the mansion without looking back. The other corporate guests scrambled out of their seats, rushing toward the exit in total panic.
Marcus stood paralyzed beside his dining chair as Detective Rodriguez stepped behind him, grabbing his wrists and pulling them behind his back.
CLICK-CLACK.
The steel handcuffs locked around Marcus’s wrists.
“Marcus Vance, you are under arrest for aggravated felony assault, unlawful containment, reckless endangerment, and federal wire fraud,” Rodriguez announced loudly.
“Mom!” Marcus cried out, looking at Sylvia in terror. “Mom, do something! Call our lawyer!”
As state troopers pulled Sylvia’s arms behind her back to handcuff her as well, she glared at me with pure hatred, her pearls catching in her jacket collar.
“You ruined my son’s life!” Sylvia shrieked, her voice echoing off the high ceilings. “You pathetic, miserable old woman! You were supposed to be nobody!”

I stepped closer to Sylvia, looking down at her trembling, panicked face.
“You mistook my quietness for weakness, Sylvia,” I said softly. “You thought I was just an old woman who baked pies and kept her mouth shut. But you forgot one thing: I built my entire career putting monsters like you and your son behind iron bars. And I’m going to make sure neither of you ever sees the light of day again.”
